The company was established in 1988 by Maria Luisa and her husband Daniel
Poumaillou. From the very beginning, their first Maria Luisa boutique was conceived
as an alternative to the then quite sleepy and conservative Faubourg Saint Honoré, the
traditional neighborhood for luxury.
Since then, Maria Luisa has offered a selection of designers who have deeply
influenced the next decades, such as the British Galliano, Westwood and McQueen, the
first generation of Belgium designers (Margiela, Ann Demeulemeester), the Japanese
(Issey Miyake, Yohji Yamamoto, Comme des Garçons), and even Helmut Lang…
Their talents will be confirmed later on as many of them will take over the artistic
direction of renowned houses. The shop has never stopped introducing other names
into international fashion such as Olivier Theyskens, Rick Owens, Nicolas Ghesquière,
Riccardo Tisci, Christopher Kane…
Maria Luisa has always run her stores the same way, pursuing modernity and seeking
young talents. She follows her subjectivity and disregards simplistic, reductive trends.
Her choices reveal a real commitment to the designers – she still buys some of them
since their first season. They have grown up in the Maria Luisa store, next to the latest
discovery. Total freedom is the only rule established within the buying process, giving
the opportunity to search for a cutting-edge modernity which reflects into total elegance
and the longing for a trademark radical chic.
Since then, the boutique has multiplied, expanded, moved, traveled, and nowadays
shopping at Maria Luisa can be experienced at Printemps Haussmann department store,
but also in Qata, Hong Kong…, and also on this website !
